Ideally looking for non-mini van, 7 seater production vehicles. We are looking to replace our Ford Freestyle
Dana – thanks for the links. We've been checking out the Highlander and the Tahoe (both Hybrid models). GM seems to be turning the corner by offering more but they are SLOW.
Headtate – I agree they are pricey. The we have 5 people in the family and a dog. ANy road trips to the grandparents involves hauling luggage and everyone. The hybrids seem to be the way to go.
Who Killed The Electric Car part 1 of 10
I just read of how a man in Los Angelese has converted an old Porsche 914 to an electric car with a 60 mile range for ,000 (24 lead acid batteries). ( http://www.latimes.com/classified/automotive/highway1/la-hy-wheels2-2008jul02,0,3144785.story )
I thought to myself that's a good idea. Probably better to buy an electric scooter though, if you don't need to take the freeway often as is the case in L.A.
I'm now doing some investigation into that idea and I hope to begin building my own electic car also. Does anyone else have similar plans?
I have heard about how its actually better to convet old small pickup trucks (Ford/Toyota/GM) to electric pickups because the box can hold more batteries and the springs are easily upgraded to hold the extra tonnage. Lead acid batts are heavy but they're cheap, so that's why Lithium Ions are shunned for now.
My thoughts are to buy an older car, as small and light as possible, and then convet it with as few batteries as possible.
Reporter Bill Vlasic test drives Ford’s new electric car technology.
(this is the old low-res version, that was uploaded before YouTube went High-Def.) It’s a convertible. It was cheap. It has four seats, and a musty smell. And he’s past the point of no return. To greatly reduce US dependency on oil?
At this time the ,000 extended range vehicle (300 Mpg), Aptera (ready in 2010) is on my list. By then their may be more options available.
Also, FORD has accepted my concept for another type of extended range vehicle. After all of the paper work and waivers I signed, I hope that it comes into fruition within the next five years.
Will you make plans (plan your budget) to purchase a high miledge (80 Mpg or more) OR alt fuel vehicle within the next five years?

Can I buy the powertrain for a hybrid or electric car?
Are there kit cars to make a Ferrari or Cobra style car?
Can a hybrid have two engines, one front, one rear, to make a HOT ROD?
Two answers were very informative.
I liked the Ford/Siemens engine on eBay and the Ferrari replica.
Peugeot coupe? Is that what Columbo drives?
The goal is not fuel efficiency or even practical daily usage. It's too launch a new sport, like supercharged family sedans launched Nascar.
Thanks to all.
