I’ve been looking at the things to convert a car to pure electric and it doesn’t seem that hard. I have a old 1994 oldsmobile sitting in my garage doing nothing cause the motor is bad and I think it would be pretty cool to make a electric car out of it to just get around town with. If any one know where I can buy conversion kits or anything let me know. If you know anything that you think might help please answer. I also heard they can be fast is that true? I also heard they only go 20 miles till there dead is that true?
Alright let me make this clear. Simply put I work on cars I understand them however I know nothing about well I know some things of how a electric works and I want to know where I can get conversion kits and good detailed directions. I’m not stupid with cars. I understand the 3 main components to electric are gonna be batteries, tranny, and electric motor. So yes I know I will have to replace the whole drivetrain.
I also I’m not trying to be “cool” or “green” because truth is I don’t care I’m the kinda guy blowing black smoke with his diesel. I’m looking for a side project and I figure my granny could drive it around town since she goes not even 10 miles from the house and getting gas is becoming a problem for her.

Its a convertible. It was cheap. It had four seats, and a musty smell. And hes past the point of no return. Join a figure it out as we go kinda guy on his quest to build an electric car that doesnt look like it fell out of a cornflakes box. Here in Ep 2 of EV Capri, you’ll see how to rid the car of fluids – and learn of a few ways NOT to do things as well!

Electric Car Conversion Kit

Quite a few of the more environmentally conscious celebrities, such as George Clooney, Danny DeVito and Matt Damon driving electric cars, you have to ask yourself, “is it because they can not afford to fill them up with gas?” I think not.

Why the conversion to electric then?

Not including the reduction in operating cost since you no longer have to purchase gas, you will be rewarded with a smoother ride, less overall upkeep, a quieter engine, a cleaner running vehicle and some huge tax incentives.

Electric Car Conversion Kit

There is a cost for all the advantages, usually around $4000, dependent on how much of the work you can perform, and how much you must have done by professionals.

It will not be difficult to find a donor vehicle to convert The most obvious choice is a small truck or SUV, as they have more cargo space to house the batteries.

If you are thinking that it is going to be beyond your ability to manage this project, and even if you are mechanically disinclined, you will still be able to convert any car to electric with the help of a detailed plan. Detailed plans can be found at your local library, online, and in some of the better electric car conversion forums. With the wealth of bad information floating around the internet these days, if you manage to get your hands on a good manual for electric car kits, consider yourself lucky!

It is true that this project will cost you a few dollars, but you will find the investment worth it. The median cost of the electric car conversion kit is roughly the equivilent of two months worth of gasoline for a commuter.Should you decide to do the smart thing, the list of advantages is long indeed. Lower maintenance cost, huge tax incentives, reduction of your carbon footprint, and reduced CO2 Emissions.

Now if you are thinking that the price is too high, and that you will not be able to afford it, please consider all the advantages I have mentioned!

The solution? You can easily change your car into electric car – We call it Electric Car Conversion. Do not be intimidated by the techical aspects of this project, you can easily manage using an electric car conversion kit.

I have already mentioned the vehicle, now you will need a space to work in. A garage or covered driveway is recommended for protection from the elements and you must also have ready access to your tools.

If you can keep yourself focused, and break the larger parts of the task down into smaller parts, it really is quite manageable.

Stop worrying about it being too difficult, if you can follow simple step-by-step instructions, then you will have no issues with an electric car conversion kit.

You will find that there is no need to be a mechanic or engineer to convert any car to electric, as you can find many articles on electric car conversion kits on the internet.

Maintenance cost are also reduced after your conversion, along with a drastic drop in the cost per mile that your car travels.

Reducing your greenhouse gas emissions, along with saving yourself a good deal of money by being immune to the rising cost of gasoline are just a few of the advantages.

So, now that you have decided to do your own electric car conversion kit, you have some choices to make. You can either install an AC motor, or a DC motor. I have done both and the AC motor wins hands down. There is only one small disadvantage to using it, and that is far outweighed by its advantages. Most models of alternating current motors are much lighter for the power output levels, they come with controllers, and they are equipped with regenerative braking.

The per unit cost is a little bit higher for alternating current motors, but it is because of these advantages.

What do you need to get started?

Plans (detailed) for an electric car conversion kit.

A workspace- garage, shop or some similar place, or even your driveway.

Common tools available in most homes.

Most importantly, a reliable helper for the heavy lifting.

You will first need a donor vehicle; a list of the best cars and trucks to use is available in the plans. Proven through three conversions, small trucks and sport utility vehicles are the best.An older model Datsun truck was used for our last conversion, and it worked out very well. The small trucks are very light, and there is ample room to place the batteries in the frame, or should you desire, a box in the bed of the truck. All of the gasoline engine and exhaust parts must be removed from the donor vehicle, once you have decided on one. It will not really take long, and you have the option of purchasing a car without the engine at some wrecking yards. You will save a lot of time and quite a bit of expense that way.

This is where you will start using your electric car conversion kit. The alternating current motor is attached directly to the transmission with a simple adapter kit.The battery placement is probably the most difficult part of the project and the detailed plans show you many options available. There must be a balance between the carrying capacity of your vehicle, and the weight of your batteries.More batteries means longer range between charges but also reduces room for passengers or cargo. The choice is yours depending on your driving habits.

When your electric car conversion kit is done, and you take your first drive right past the gas station, I doubt you will be able to stop smiling. With a range of over 200 miles, and capable of reaching freeway speeds, your electric car drives just like any other vehicle on the road, except there is never a need to fill it up with gas.

Think about it for a moment, isn’t it time you did something about this situation for you and your family? Let’s get started!

There are four steps you must follow for your electric car conversion kit:

3.Follow the plans and buy the parts and tools which you’ll need. This part of the Electric Car conversion is the easiest in my opinion. The parts and tools can be bought in every store actually. There’s nothing special needed. You’ll need drills and wrenches and some other tools which you probably already own anyway.

4.Build it! Follow the plans and you will be fine. I did my first electric car conversion kit in less than two weeks. There really is nothing complicated about it.

Get started today! You have nothing to gain by waiting.

An electric car conversion kit will allow an individual to make a gasoline propelled vehicle into an electric vehicle. If you are interested in electric car conversion kits, they are available from vendors to use in a do-it-yourself form. You should research the best types of cars suited for the electric car conversion kit as well as the type of car to meet your needs. However, there are a number of things to keep in mind before converting to a “green” car.

A Few Things To Consider

The majority of electric cars can only be driven between 30 and 100 miles, this is affected by driving conditions and the weight of theautomobile. For those who have a daily commute in this range, an electric car conversion kit makes perfect sense. For a two car family, where one vehicle is used only for short trips, an electric car is a good alternative. It will save a great deal on the costs of gasoline annually. If your daily commute is more than 30 miles one way and/or in rough or hilly conditions, an electric car may not be the best alternative for you. However, if the daily commute is only 20 miles each way, and the road conditions are normal it may be ideal.

An electric vehicle needs to be recharged overnight. This requires a garage or carport that has electrical outlets. Most electric car conversion kits allow your car to travel up to 25 miles “per gallon” ratio, top speeds are comparable to gas-powered vehicles, and can carry up to four passengers. The cost is usually less than $10,000, but batteries need to be purchased about once a year. These cost about $300 each; that is another expense that should be considered.

Individuals who are interested in learning more about electric car kit conversions can attend various schools with courses on the subject. These courses show the proper way to perform the elements of the conversion process, reducing mistakes and errors that can affect the end result. There are also various workshops available in communities with instructors who are qualified to give you the basic information for working with an electric car kit. They can also assist you with devising a time frame and budget that works to get the project done. For those who aren’t confident in their mechanical abilities, a mechanic with experience in this type of installation may be the best option. Companies which specialize in converting vehicles are springing up rapidly. Many are available via the Internet, and there are also websites which direct the user to conversion specialists near their areas.

Having considered all the ramifications and limitations of converting your vehicle, and if you decide that its right for you and your family, there are many ways of going about the process. Once completed, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part toward protecting the environment, and saving yourself money, too.

The red GOLF was was converted to then-state-of-the-art spiral wound Optima batteries by acpropulsion. Conversion was a team effort, with Paul Carosa doing much of the design and construction. Alan Cocconi was the chief designer of the the Gen I drive system and Battery Optimizer modules. Dave Sivertsen did the battery optimizer controller. This is probably the most sophisticated lead-acid battery management system ever devised, with individual module-level monitoring of sealed spiral-wound lead-acid batteries that are still available today. Of course, the best module-level Battery Management System is not quite as good as the cell-level monitoring of the (successor) T-zero and then ebox, a system now used on the banked Lithium cells in the Tesla Roadster. While the Tesla might be considered the third-generation EV1, the Red Car could be considered the second-generation, perhaps a test article among that pack, and thus has a place in automotive history. On the video, the Red Car is compared with two Toyota RAV4-EV, which have over 100 miles range using nimh nickel batteries produced prior to the Chevron lawsuit’s shutting down production (Nov., 2002). But, really, lead-acid is the best choice for the daily commute; the lead-acid EV1, upgraded to PSB 1260 batteries, had a range over 100 miles, more than enough for the daily grind even if you didn’t plug-in while working. The weight of the battery pack, 1300 lbs., in contrasted with the Tesla’s 1000 lb. pack, and it’s not

Why an Electric Car Conversion

This was a video produced by Vince Grassi as a video project,A small town American man that followed his dreams of building an electric car,And with the help of a few freinds his dream has come thru.

I was thinking about buying a bmw 3 series sedan but the only thing holding me back is the fuel mileage it gets. I started looking into conversion kits that can turn a car into a hybrid or electric car. I couldn’t find any specific kits so I don’t know if the technology is out yet. Could someone please tell me if it is those kits are out there. Please list as much info as possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
