Does anybody besides me see any conflict with the way highways are funded and future plans for electric cars?
It isn’t just that less gas taxes will be available, it will also increase the price of power for our homes and businesses because of higher demand. If they add a tax on electricity for highways then non drivers are paying, if they pay out of the general fund they must raise all of our taxes, again making non drivers pay, or worse we’ll have low income drivers not paying at all. Should we have a mileage tax in the future to fund highways?

You want a mileage tax so the government can put monitors in our cars to keep track of us?

No thanks. Big brother knows and controls enough already I’ll pass.
Yes I see that, thanks for expressing it so nicely! God Bless! Merry Chritsmas
That’s a good point I haven’t seen discussed before, there are other alternate fuels like home made bio diesel or CNG? ( I hear natural gas costs 1/2 the price of gasoline in the U.S., I’m guessing no transport tax on CNG.) One can tax incentives for alternate fuels to continue, perhaps they can charge a tax on public electric charging stations to get electric to chip in their part for hwy. maintenance.
The LA Times reported Oregon for one is considering switching to mileage tax.

FYI: the average combined State and Fed tax is: Gas 47.0 cents, Diesel 51.4 cents
Of the 18.3 cent federal portion, the Highway account gets 15.44 cents per gallon, while the Mass Transit Account receives 2.86 cents per gallon.
A big promoter of electrics, the Dutch charge a 180% new car tax for gas burners on top of the base 25% car tax.
